Mountains TMJ & Dental Sleep Medicine

Welcome to Mountains TMJ & Dental Sleep Medicine

This business was founded at the end of 2019, specifically to help those people in Katoomba and across the Blue Mountains who are dealing with one or more of the following –

  • TMJ Disorders (TMJD)
  • Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB)
  • Distorted Facial and Upper Airway Growth and Development
  • Orthodontic Problems for children and adults

We bring a new and advanced approach to the treatment of these conditions for the Blue Mountains.

Dr Baret recognised long ago that there was a close relationship between TMJ Dysfunction, early growth and development of the jaws and growth of the upper airway. Because of these relationships, we can eexplain why it is that so many with TMJ Dysfunction (TMD) also suffer with Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBDs) like Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

These conditions are also closely related to Orthodontic Problems, or Malocclusions. In fact, a recent study done in Sydney, showed that of all of the 7-9 year old children referred to the orthodontist for their malocclusion, no less than 92% already had a SRBD (diagnosed with a hospital sleep study overseen and reported by one of Australia’s leading paediatric sleep physicians). This was an excellent study, done under the strictest of conditions to be sure its results were genuine, and with a very large sample of over 3,000 children.

We do not yet have a similar study looking at TMJDs in these children, but Dr Baret’s clinical experience of over four decades treating TMJDs and Malocclusions, tells him that the results would very likely be quite similar.

Dr Baret has been treating TMJ related conditions and Sleep Breathing Disorders since the early 1980s.  Over more than four decades, he has continued his education and sought to provide the best possible treatment for his patients.

At Mountains TMJ & Dental Sleep Medicine, we look for the causes of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJD), Breathing Disorders and Orthodontic Problems, and work to treat not only the symptoms but also the causes of the problem. Dr Baret’s observations and clinical experience have been confirmed in the scientific literature, and he continues to treat these conditions each with a proper respect for the possible existence of any of the other conditions.

Much of what we see, with Kid’s crowded teeth, teenage orthodontic problems, mouth breathing, childhood snoring and sleep apnoea, TMJ disorders, concentration problems at school, and even suspected ADHD is commonly associated with upper airway problems.  It all comes down to making compensations so we can keep breathing – one breath at a time…

It’s all about Survival…
